How an Alabama Innovation Helped Save a Million Babies

In remote clinics across the developing world, doctors and birth attendants face a heartbreaking reality: the number one killer of newborn infants is not disease or infection, but cold.

When a baby is born premature or underweight, they lack the body fat required to regulate their own core temperature. In a modern hospital, that infant is immediately placed inside a $20,000 electric incubator. But in rural villages across India, sub-Saharan Africa, and Latin America, where electrical grids fail daily or do not exist at all, a standard incubator is useless. Without constant warmth, hypothermia sets in within hours.

A little over a decade ago, a multidisciplinary team of graduate students at Stanford University set out to rewrite this grim statistic. They designed a radical prototype: Embrace, a portable, reusable infant incubator that looked like a miniature sleeping bag and could be manufactured for around $20.

The sleeping bag itself was a brilliant mechanical design. But as the prototypes moved toward real-world testing, the founders hit a massive, seemingly insurmountable thermodynamics wall: How do you continuously deliver exact human body heat to a fragile infant for hours without a plug, a battery, or electricity without accidentally burning the baby?

Standard heating pads were too dangerous and unpredictable. Water bottles cooled off too fast. The students needed a thermal storage medium that could act as a precision, non-electric heater. To solve the problem, they reached out to an Alabama chemist known for solving the impossible: Dr. William “Rusty” Sutterlin.

The Call for a Chemical Miracle

When the Stanford founders contacted Rusty, they weren’t looking for standard off-the-shelf chemistry; they needed a custom material that could behave like an organic battery for heat.

Drawing on the deep expertise in physical and bio-based chemistry, Rusty went to work inventing a specialized Phase Change Material (PCM).

Standard industrial waxes and synthetics were toxic, volatile, or melted at the wrong temperatures. Rusty engineered a completely novel PCM derived from safe, renewable feedstocks—tailoring the chemistry so the material underwent a solid-to-liquid phase transition at one precise, life-saving threshold: 37°C (98.6°F).

The Science of Survival

Rusty’s renewable PCM functioned like a thermal sponge. When heated, the material absorbed an immense amount of thermal energy as it melted, locking away “latent heat” without ever exceeding a safe temperature ceiling. This completely eliminated the risk of burns.

Once placed inside the Embrace sleeping bag, the magic of the Phase Change Material took over:

  • Precision Body-Temperature Release: As the PCM slowly transitioned back from a liquid to a solid, it released its stored heat at a constant, unwavering physiological temperature over a span of several hours. To the baby inside, it felt exactly like a mother’s embrace.
  • The “Boiling Water” Battery: Because electricity wasn’t an option in off-grid villages, Rusty designed the chemistry to be infinitely reusable and simple to reset. A nurse or parent could simply slide the PCM pouch out of the sleeping bag, drop it into a pot of boiling water for a few minutes to re-melt the material, and slide it back in. Zero wires. Zero electricity. Infinite recharges.

From the Lab to a Million Lives

The integration of Rusty’s renewable Phase Change Material was the catalyst that transformed Embrace from a clever student prototype into a world-changing medical device.

Today, the Embrace infant warmer is recognized globally as one of the most impactful humanitarian technologies of our time. It has been deployed across dozens of countries in the developing world and is officially credited with saving the lives of over one million premature babies.

For Dr. Rusty Sutterlin and the team at Organic Harvest Lab, that million-baby milestone is more than just a footnote in a bio. It is a defining testament to what we believe at our core: with the elite green chemistry, advanced separation science, and Alabama innovation doesn’t just build great companies, they have the power to change the world.
